Reagan Housely, a track and field athlete at Andover Central, spent all year preparing for the spring track season.
“This season I really focused on getting in bigger and longer poles which includes getting faster and stronger,” Housely said. “Everyday since the school year started, Bryce Barkdull and I were up in the weight room lifting and training as well as down on the track when the weather permitted. So much of pole vault is being strong enough to put your body in the positions it needs to be in. I became so much stronger and faster than last year.”
While you mostly hear about the good achievements that come along with high school sports, Housely can vouch that bumps in the road come along with practices.
“One time, my coach had me try a new grip on a new pole,” Housely said. “I got to the back of the runway and started my approach, but what I didn’t know is that I accidentally switched up my starting numbers and began five feet farther back. When I got to the takeoff, it felt off. I was flying through the air long before my pole hit the back of the box. The pole went flying all the way into the long jump pit and I went straight into the box. I managed to walk away with only a few bruises. Once everyone knew I was ok, we all had a good laugh, and I finished out my practice.”
Housely will continue her track and field career at the higher level after high school.
“I am signed with Washburn University on a track scholarship and will continue my education and athletic career there,” Housely said. “I aspire to become a nurse like my mom and help others.”
