Andover cross country athlete Gabby Day had a very successful 2022 season, being named a 3rd team all-Metro runner by the Wichita Eagle, in addition to making state appearances in both cross country and track. To build on that, she embraced a busy offseason schedule. “During the summer I was running 6 days a week on average, ” Day said, “and this year I focused on getting a really strong long distance base, and building off of my fitness from track.”
When asked for her goals for the season, Day stated that she wanted “to go under 20 minutes in the 5k and qualify for State.” As for a team goal, she is aiming high- “For our team we are looking to win league and regionals, and to go to State.” Day highlighted the community aspect of her team, stating “My favorite part of being on the team is the community that you build. We have a really solid group of people on the team and I think that it shows. Teammates play a huge role in how much fun you have doing this sport, and mine do a great job.”
When asked about her proudest accomplishment, she put the emphasis on a team accolade- “I am most proud when our girls’ and boys’ teams made it to State in 2020. It came as a bit of a surprise, which made it even more exciting.”
After high school, Gabby wants to continue to run competitively, as well as continue musical pursuits. “My plans are to run cross country and track and field at the collegiate level, and continue playing my trombone, “she said, “and I am undecided on a school and major.”
